Regardless of your experience or even lack of it, SAFETY SHOULD ALWAYS COME FIRST, LAST AND ALWAYS! Tools, equipment, parts and even your car can be replaced relatively easily and with little cost. However, compared to the pain, suffering and possibly permanent condition of a bodily injury it is a minor issue! There are many hazards involved in life, almost all are avoidable with some planning and forethought. The same theory holds true in auto repair. Automobile systems store energy in the form of electricty (the battery), hydraulics (brakes, power steering, even the fuel lines), mechanical (springs), and just the plain desire for the weight of the car to fall down if not properly secured while on jacks, etc... IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF YOUR PROCEDURE THEN STOP! Ask questions, check the repair manual again, read the owners manual again if the tool came with one, or have a competent professional take over. A main goal of this site is to help save money on repairs, we will not intentionally give unsafe advice. Common sense is a key to safe work habits. (Thx to CL)
